May Pin/Ornament of the Month
Designer's Note
I procrastinated a long time before stitching this Design, because it looked so boring in the Diagrams. When I finally got all 3 versions stitched and showed them to the my fellow Guild members, everybody agreed that this is one of the most successful designs so far!
The Moral to this story is ... What do I know, I'm only the Designer!  *G*

Instructions: This page includes Instructions and Charts for everything except the Smyrna Cross Border.

To get to the Smyrna Cross Border Instructions, click HERE.

Clear (translucent) Plastic Canvas 14mesh
White or ecru may be substituted.

Stretcher Bars are recommended. Attach Plastic Canvas with staples or tacks.

Threads: General Suggestions
Smyrna Cross Border - Sparkling Threads such as Tiara, Metallic Ribbon Floss, Fyre Werks.

Background Stitches- Matte, textured Thread such as Silk and Ivory or Very Velvet, Medium Sheen such as Pearl Cotton. Use a Thread with maximum contrast to the Thread chosen for the Main Pattern ie: contrast with color or texture.

Main Pattern  - Any Sparkle such as Tiara, Flair, Fyre Werks or a Variegated Thread.

Beads: This Design looks equally good with and without Beads.

If you decide not to Bead your pin, consider Beading a set of Stitch Counters!
Click HERE to get to the Beaded Stitch Counters.

Color Combinations: General Suggestions

Using 1 Color - Use a Sparkle for the Smyrna Border and Main Pattern and  a matte Thread featuring the chosen color for the Background Stitches.

Using 2 Colors -
Variation 1: Use a Sparkle in Color 1 for the Smyrna Border and a Matte Thread in Color 1 for the Background Stitches and a Sparkle featuring Color 2 for the Main Pattern.

Variation 2: Use a Variegated Thread in Color 1 for the Smyrna Border and Main Pattern and a Solid Thread featuring Color 2 for the Background Stitches.

Order of Working -

1.Smyrna Border:
Stitch Smyrna Cross Stitches - Click HERE for diagram of Individual Smyrna Cross Stitch. Illustrated in Black on Diagram 1.

2.
Background Stitches:
Stitch the Background as illustrated in Blue on Diagram 1.
The Gray Squares represent the holes where the main pattern will be stitched. They should remain empty after the background has been completed.

NOTE: Each square represent a hole in the plastic canvas.

3. Main Pattern: Stitch the Main Pattern AFTER stitching the Background.
I stitched the Corner Motifs first.
As you look at Diagram 2, note that  #2 and #11 share the same hole. After finishing at #12, do a compensating stitch by coming up from the back at #11 and going down at the Black dot near #1. This stitch will share the hole with the corner Smyrna Cross Stitch, illustrated in Red on Diagram 2.

Next stitch the Purple Motifs (designated Purple only to more clearly delineate the design elements.) Follow the numbering on Diagram 2.
Note that #1 shares the hole with the Smyrna Cross Border and #2 will share the hole with the Corner Motif.

4.
Finally finish up by stitching the Compensation Stitches in Diagram 3.
Start at up at A, down at B, up at C and down at B. Go back to C, down at D, up at E and back down at D. Next come back up at E, down at F, up at G and back down at F. Finish off by coming up at G, down at H, up at A again and down at H. This can be done with a single run of thread, in the number of plies appropriate to that Thread.

5. If you choose to Bead, string appropriate beads from the center hole.
If not, stitch the compensating stitches shown in the center of Diagram 3.
