March Pin/Ornament of the Month
Instructions: This page includes
Instructions and Charts for everything except the Smyrna Cross Border.
To get to the Smyrna Cross Border, click HERE.
NOTE: The March Pin of the Month features a Double Border of Smyrna Cross Stitches
which is diagrammed below.
MATERIALS:
Clear (translucent) Plastic Canvas 14mesh
White or ecru may be substituted.
Stretcher Bars are recommended. Attach Plastic Canvas with staples or tacks.
Threads: General Suggestions
Outer and Inner Smyrna Cross Borders - Sparkling Threads such as Tiara, Metallic Ribbon
Floss, Fyre Werks
Area between Borders (Blue and Red on diagram below) - Matte, textured Thread such
as Silk and Ivory or Very Velvet, Medium Sheen such as Pearl Cotton, Sparkle such as
Fyre Werks, or consider a Variegated Thread.
Center Motif (Blue on Diagram) - Subtle Flat, Ribbon-like Thread such as Rhapsody, any
Ribbon Floss, Silk Ribbon, Flair, Fyre Werks or consider a Variegated Thread.
Filling Thread (between Inner Border and Center Motif) - Matte (not glossy or
shiny) Thread such as Silk and Ivory, Pearl Cotton, Embroidery Floss laid with laying tool,
Very Velvet, Velour
Beads: General Suggestions
Create a small group of Dangles (an odd number of dangles works best) to cascade from the
center hole of Pin. Use Seed beads and small Accent Beads. Otherwise, fill in with small
stitches of the thread used for the Center (Blue on Diagram) Motif.
Color Combinations: General Suggestions
Using 1 Color - Use a Sparkle for the 2 Smyrna Borders and Center Motif
(Blue on Diagram) with another Sparkle in a different value (meaning lighter or darker)
for the Area between the Borders (Blue and Red on Diagram) and a matte, non-shiny thread
for the Filling Thread.
Using 2 Colors -
Variation 1: Color A in a Sparkle for the 2 Borders and Center Motif
(Blue on Diagram) with Color B in a Sparkle for the Area between the Borders (Blue and Red
on Diagram) and in a Matte Thread Filling Thread.
Variation 2: Color A in a Sparkle (but not necessarily the same thread)
for the 2 Borders with Color B in a Sparkle for the Center Motif (Blue on Diagram). Then
use either Color A or B in a flat thread for the Filling Thread and the Area between the
Borders (Blue and Red on Diagram).
HINT - I usually plan for the Filling Thread to be Matte with
the idea that it will recede visually and thus not pull attention away from the Central
Design Motif/s.
Specific Threads for Stitched Models:
Red and Green Pin
2 Smyrna Borders: Green Ribbon Floss (144F-6)
Area between Borders (Red and Blue on diagram): Red Fyre
Werks (F46)
Center Motif (Blue on Diagram): Red Fyre Werks (F46)
Filling Thread: Green Silk and Ivory - Emerald #25
Beads: Red and Green Accent beads and Seed beads
Brown and Green Pin
2 Smyrna Borders: DMC Pearl Cotton 938
Area between Borders (Red and Blue on diagram):
Very Velvet Dark Green - V224
Center Motif (Blue on Diagram): Bravo A126 Timberland (3 strands)
Filling Thread: Very Velvet Dark Green - V224
Beads: Green and Brown (chosen to go with the Bravo) Accent beads and
Seed beads
Pink and Green Pin
2 Smyrna Borders: Light Green Fyre Werks (F49)
Area between Borders (Red and Blue on diagram): White Silk and Ivory
Center Motif (Blue on Diagram): Pink Tiara T123
Filling Thread: White Silk and Ivory
Beads: White, Pink and Opalescent Accent beads and Seed beads
Overall Diagram for March Pin

Note: To improve loading time the number of colors in the design were
reduced.
The colors shown are not representative of the colors used.
Order of Working -
1.Stitch Double Border of Smyrna Cross Stitches - Click HERE for diagram of Individual Smyrna Cross
Stitch.

NOTE: Each square represent a hole in the plastic canvas, thus there should be 2 rows of
holes between the Outer Border (14 Smyrnas per side) and the Inner Border (9 Smyrnas per
side).
2.Stitch Area between Outer Smyrna Border and Inner Smyrna Border
(see Overall Diagram above). Stitch used is Diagonal Scotch Stitch (diagrammed
below). Note that this area is illustrated with 2 colors to differentiate the stitches but
is stitched in one color.

NOTE: Needle comes up on odd numbers. Even numbers not illustrated due to space
constraints. Same color thread is used, but shown as 2 colors on diagram to clarify the
different stitches.

3.Rotate chart and stitch Center (Blue in above diagram and Black
on this diagram) Motif. Each stitch will come up from under the previous stitch
on the side AWAY from where it will end up and cross OVER the previously existing stitch
as it is finished. Lavender squares are there to help clarify the lineup for the end of
each stitch.
4. Filling Stitches - work long stitches from Inner Smyrna Border and
bury them under the Blue Center Motif. Stitches are at right angles to the Smyrna Border
side that they are coming from.
HINT - Spin the Pin as you work to keep each side of Smyrna
Border stitches at the Top.
5.Beads - From the center of the Design, stitch several Bead Dangles of
varying lengths.
