Instructions: This page includes Instructions and Charts for everything except the Smyrna Cross Border.

To get to the Smyrna Cross Border Instructions, click HERE.

Designer's Note
For added punch, this design uses two colors in the Smyrna Border. Use one color for the X and the other color for the +, alternating on each Smyrna Cross.

MATERIALS:
Clear (translucent) Plastic Canvas 14mesh
White or ecru may be substituted.

Stretcher Bars are recommended. Attach Plastic Canvas with staples or tacks.

Threads: General Suggestions
Smyrna Cross Border - Sparkling Threads such as Tiara, Metallic Ribbon Floss, Fyre Werks mixed with Threads with a Sheen such as Ribbon Floss, Neon Rays or Shimmer.

Background Stitches-
Matte, textured Thread such as Silk and Ivory or Very Velvet
Medium Sheen such as Pearl Cotton or Neon Rays.
Use a Thread with maximum contrast to the Thread chosen for the Main Pattern ie: contrast with color or texture.

Main Pattern  - Threads with a Sheen such as Ribbon Floss, Neon Rays or Shimmer.

Beads: This Design looks good with Beads, for an added kick!

If you decide not to Bead your pin, consider Beading a set of Stitch Counters instead!
Click HERE to get to the Beaded Stitch Counters.

Color Combinations: General Suggestions

Using 1 Color - Use a Sparkle for the Smyrna Border and Main Pattern and  a Matte Thread featuring the chosen color for the Background Stitches.

Using 2 Colors -
Use Sparkles for both Color 1 and 2 in the Smyrna Border and a Thread with a Sheen in Color 1 for the Background Stitches. Sparkles featuring Colors 1 and 2 for the Main Pattern will finish it off.

Using 3 Colors -
Use Color 1 and 2 for the Smyrna Border,  Colors 2 for the Main Pattern and Color 3 for the Background Stitches.

Note: The colors shown are not representative of the colors used but were changed to more clearly delineate the design elements.

3. Main Pattern: Stitch the Main Pattern AFTER stitching the Background.
This first stitch in each sequence will share its hole with the corner Smyrna Cross Stitch. Also, note that  #22 and #24 share the same hole.

NOTE: Each square represent a hole in the plastic canvas.

Center Compensation
Follow the stitching at the center of Diagram 2, stitching 2 squares to fill in around the center.

Filling Stitches
With this Design, there is an area between motifs, that is not well covered with Thread. It corresponds to the diagonal on Diagram 2 that runs from #1 to #23. I used the Background Thread and Backstitched as far as necessary to hide the Ground Fabric/Plastic. On most of the designs, I stitched back as far as #13 on Diagram 2. Another option is to lay a Thread from #1 to #23 and couch it down as needed.

5. If you choose to Bead, string appropriate beads from the center hole.
