July Pin/Ornament of the Month

Designer's Note
I just recently discovered the joys of Kreinik's 1/16" Ribbon. This month's Designs showcase it exclusively. It is fun to stitch with and the colors are thrilling.
If you haven't tried it...YOU MUST!
If you have tried it, why didn't you tell me??? *VBG*

Instructions: This page includes Instructions and Charts for everything except the Smyrna Cross Border.

To get to the Smyrna Cross Border Instructions, click HERE.

MATERIALS:
Clear (translucent) Plastic Canvas 14mesh
White or ecru may be substituted.

Stretcher Bars are recommended. Attach Plastic Canvas with staples or tacks.

Threads: General Suggestions
Smyrna Cross Border - Kreinik's 1/16 Ribbon

Scotch Stitch Border- Kreinik's 1/16 Ribbon

Center Medallion, 2 Color  - Kreinik's 1/16 Ribbon

Since you won't be Beading your pin, consider Beading a set of Stitch Counters instead!
Click HERE to get to the Beaded Stitch Counters.

Color Combinations: General Suggestions
The major design issue here is the contrast between the 2 colors used. If you want a strong variation in the Center Medallion, choose 2 colors which contrast strongly. If not, choose 2 colors which are close, as in the Silver and Multi Pin which is beautiful but very subtle.

Using 2 Colors -

Use Color 1 for the Smyrna Border, Color 2 for the Scotch Stitch Border and both for the Center Medallion.

Use Color 1 and Color 2 for the Smyrna Border, Color 2 for the Scotch Stitch Border and both for the Center Medallion.

Use Color 1 and Color 2 for the Smyrna Border, Color 1 for the Scotch Stitch Border and Color 2 for the Center Medallion.

Scotch Stitch Border: Gold - 002V

Order of Working -

1.Smyrna Border:
Stitch Smyrna Cross Stitches - Click HERE for diagram of Individual Smyrna Cross Stitch. Illustrated in Black on Diagram 1.

2.Scotch Stitch Border
Stitch the Scotch Stitch Border next, being careful to match the Stitch orientation in the corners!
Check below for the diagram for the Scotch Stitch.

NOTE: Needle comes up on odd numbers. Even numbers not illustrated due to space constraints. Same color thread is used, but shown as 2 colors on diagram to clarify the different stitches.

3.Center Medallion

Diagram 2
July Inner Numbers
NOTE: Needle comes up on odd numbers. Squares represent holes in plastic canvas. Because 2 threads are used, you will need 2 needles, each threaded with one of the threads. You will alternate stitching with them.

Center Medallion Order of Working
Thread 2 needles, each one with one of the colors designated for the Center Medallion.
Start by bringing Color 1 up at 1 (see Diagram 2), down at 2 and back up at 3, letting the needle dangle on the front of your stitching.
Next, bring Color 2 up at A, down at B and back up at C, letting the needle dangle.
Go back to Color 1, go down at 4 and back up at 5.
With Color 2, go down at D and come back up at E.
Continue alternating in this pattern until you have gone all the way around the center.

Notes:
The stitching pattern is designed to avoid a build up of thread on the back of the piece.
You will need to work the Thread/Ribbon with your fingers to get it lay flat as you stitch the center.
Diagram 2 has the numbering for only half of the Center Medallion because it got too crowded on the Diagram. Continue with the stitching sequence all the way around.
