February Pin/Ornament of the Month
Instructions: This page includes Instructions and Charts for everything except the Smyrna Cross Border.

To get to the Smyrna Cross Border, click HERE.

MATERIALS:
Clear (translucent) Plastic Canvas 14mesh
White or ecru may be substituted.

Stretcher Bars are recommended. Attach Plastic Canvas with staples or tacks.

Threads: General Suggestions
Smyrna Cross Border- Sparkling Threads such as Tiara, Metallic Ribbon Floss, Fyre Werks

Inner Motif (Purple on Diagram)  - Same thread as the Smyrna Border or Subtle Flat, Ribbon-like Thread such as Rhapsody, any Ribbon Floss, Silk Ribbon, Flair, Fyre Werks (consider a Variegated)

Outer Motif (Gold on Diagram) - Subtle Flat, Ribbon-like Thread such as Rhapsody, any Ribbon Floss, Silk Ribbon, Flair, Fyre Werks or consider a Variegated Thread.

Filling Thread (between Border and Outer Motif, between Outer and Inner Motif) - Matte (not glossy or shiny) Thread such as Silk and Ivory, Pearl Cotton, Embroidery Floss laid with laying tool, Very Velvet, Velour

Beads: General Suggestions
See Black Dots on Diagram for suggested placement of Seed Beads.

Create a small group of Dangles (an odd number of dangles works best) to cascade from the center hole of Pin. Use Seed beads and small Accent Beads. Otherwise, fill in with small stitches of the thread used for the Inner (Purple on Diagram) Motif.

Color Combinations: General Suggestions

Using 1 Color - Use a Sparkle for the Smyrna Border and Inner Motif (Purple on Diagram) with another Sparkle in a different value (meaning lighter or darker) for the Outer Motif (Gold on Diagram) and a matte, non-shiny thread for the Filling Thread.

Variation 2: Color A in a Sparkle (but not necessarily the same thread) for the Border and Outer Motif (Gold on Diagram) with Color B in a Sparkle for the Inner Motif (Purple on Diagram). Then use either Color A or B in a flat thread for the Filling Thread.
HINT - I usually plan for the Filling Thread to be Matte with the idea that it will recede visually and thus not pull attention away from the Central Design Motif.

Order of Working -

1.Stitch Border of Smyrna Cross Stitches - Click HERE for more Information about the Smyrna Border.

2.Stitch Gold (Outer) Motif, using laying tool or fingers to be sure stitches lay flat. Start by bringing thread up at 1, as indicated on chart.

3.Rotate chart and stitch Purple (Inner) Motif, using laying tools or fingers to be sure stitches lay flat. Start by bringing thread up at A, as indicated on chart.

4. Filling Stitches - work long stitches from Smyrna Border and bury them under the Gold Outer Motif. Stitches are at right angles to the Smyrna Border side that they are coming from.
HINT - Spin the Pin as you work to keep each side of Smyrna Border stitches at the Top.

5.Black Dots indicate placement of Seed Beads on design. From the center of the Design, stitch several Bead Dangles of varying lengths.

Consider saving the diagram on your computer so that you can print them out in a larger size.
To do this, click on the Diagram with your RIGHT Mouse Button. Click on SAVE AS and choose a place for the diagram on your hard drive or on a diskette. You can then place the image in a Word Processing program or Graphics program and size it to a convenient size, then print it out.

When you can't find Seed Beads the right color, consider using clear (even clear and opalescent) beads and sew them on using the proper color thread. Joyce did this in the Peach and Light Blue Pin this month.
