Stitching the Inner Border and Center
Rhodes Cabochon should take place AFTER stitching the Outer Cross
Stitch Border.
Instructions for the Outer Cross Stitch Border can be found HERE.

Cross Stitch over 1

Diagram 5
Smyrna Cross Stitch

Chart 1
- Inner Border
Thread - 1/16"
Ribbon Use 6'-7' length
Stitch - Cross Stitch over 1
(Dia. 4)
Substitution - Use Smyrna Cross
(Diagram 5) instead of Cross Stitch over 1, but use #8
Braid, if doing so.
Comments
-
Use Diagram 6 for placement, and Diagram 7 for
stitching details.
Note that holes are shared, as in 3/5.This stitching order helps
lock the metallic thread.
If using Smyrna Cross (Diagram 5)
instead of Cross Stitch over 1, use #8 Braid.
Using Diagram 6 and 7 for placement, work Step 1 of Diagram
5 first.
Note that holes are shared, as in 3/5. This stitching order helps
lock the metallic thread.
Then go back around again, stitching Step
2 (Dia. 5).
If you make a mistake, it is much easier to rip it out, using this method.

Chart 1
- Center Rhodes Cabochon
Thread -1/16"
Ribbon Use 6'-7' length
Stitch - Rhodes Stitch (Diagram 6)
Comments - Use a 6'-7' length of thread to avoid having to start a
new thread.
Use an Away Knot or secure thread in Inner Border to start.
Follow the letters in Diagram 6.
Gray squares indicate spaces/holes between lines/threads of the ground
fabric.
The stitching pattern is designed to avoid a buildup of thread on the back
of the fabric.
Use your fingers or a laying tool to untwist each stitch.
The thread should lay flat for the best appearance.
I finish by taking my last stitch over the first stitch, at a-b.

For best results, work these designs on stretcher bars or a
scroll frame. Tape the edges and staple or tack to the stretcher bars.
Note: If using a scroll frame, it might be more convenient to use a piece
of canvas larger that 6"x6".
I like to mark the top of the fabric and also mark a center point on the
top and on one of the sides.
Each line of the grid represents a thread of the ground fabric.
I always work from the outside of the design to the inside, stitching the
Rhodes Cabochon last. I have found that if I have counted correctly on the
outside border, everything else falls into place easily. If I have made a
mistake in the outer border, I usually discover it quickly. To find the
location of the first stitch of the
Outer Cross Stitch Border
(as indicated in Diagram 1
and Diagram 3) find the center of the canvas and count up 16
threads and to the left 8 threads. This is where you will bring the needle
up for the first stitch. Put the Away Knot over to the far right,
following the same horizontal row.
Careful counting on the
Outer Cross Stitch Border
minimizes the chance of making a
mistake. *Count Twice, Stitch Once!*
Double check the Instructions to tell which Thread or which Color is used.
Chart Color are NOT indicative of the Design Colors.
Thread Heaven will tame Metallics and I now use
it on everything. |
