August Pin/Ornament of
the Month
Designer's Note
This month, consider using
two colors in the Smyrna Border. Use one color for the X
and the other color for the +.
Instructions: This page
includes Instructions and Charts for everything except the Smyrna Cross
Border.

MATERIALS:
Clear (translucent) Plastic Canvas 14mesh
White or ecru may be substituted.
Stretcher Bars are recommended. Attach Plastic Canvas with staples or
tacks.
Threads: General Suggestions
Smyrna Cross Border - Tiara and Shimmer, Fyre Werks, Fyre
Werks and Tiara, Kreinik #8 Braid
Background Stitches - Metallic Ribbon Floss, Fyre Werks
Center Medallions - Ribbon Floss, Fyre Werks, Shimmer,
Metallic Ribbon Floss, Kreinik 1/16" Ribbon
Since you won't be Beading your pin, consider Beading a set of Stitch
Counters instead!

Color Combinations: General Suggestions
The major design issue here is the contrast between the 2 colors used. If
you want a strong variation in the Center Medallions, choose 2 colors which
contrast strongly. If not, choose 2 colors which are close, as in the
Silver and Peach Pin which is beautiful but very subtle.

Using 2 Colors -
Use Color 1 and 2 for the Smyrna Border, Color 2 for the Background and
Color 1 for the Center Medallions.
Use Color 1 for the Smyrna Border and the Background and Color 2 for the Center
Medallions.

Silver and Peach Pin
Smyrna Border: Fyre Werks F 47 Peach for the X,
Tiara T103 Silver for the +
Background: Fyre Werks F5 Silver
Center Medallions: Fyre Werks F 47 Peach
Purple and White Pin
Smyrna Border: Purple Shimmer for the X, Tiara
T117 White Pearl for the +
Background: Metallic Ribbon Floss - Opal RF144F-10
Center Medallions: Purple Shimmer
Red and Black Pin
Smyrna Border: Tiara Black T1107
Background: Fyre Werks Black F31
Center Medallions: Fyre Werks Red F38

Note: The colors shown are not representative of the colors used but were
changed to more clearly delineate the design elements. Squares represent holes in plastic
canvas. Grey squares are to help in placement of design elements.
Order of Working -
1.Smyrna Border:
Stitch Smyrna Cross Stitches - Click HERE
for diagram of Individual Smyrna Cross Stitch. Illustrated in Black on Diagram

2. Background
Stitch the Background next, being careful to match
the Stitch orientation in the corners! Illustrated in Green on Diagram
1. Stitching this first will simplify placement of the
Center Medallions.
3.Center Medallions
Diagram 2
Use Diagram 1 for placement of Center Medallions.
Notes:
The stitching pattern is designed to avoid a build up of thread on the
back of the piece.
You will need to work the Thread/Ribbon with your fingers to get it lay
flat as you stitch the center.
